Exotic Car, Supercar, Hypercar – What’s the Difference?
Virtually everyone knows there is a huge difference between a Honda Civic and a Lamborghini Gallardo. The question is whether there is a difference within the world of high-end, performance cars themselves. Words to describe the cars that many of us only dream of - like "luxury," "exotic," "supercar," and "hypercar" - are often used interchangeably, although they can be very different cars. If you are wondering what category the car you dream of or already own falls under, read on!
Whether you have recently purchased your dream car or have owned it for many years, you know how important maintenance and service are for these cars. Your car deserves a highly skilled, super-experienced Baltimore, MD expert vehicle technician from Rosso Service. What Is an Exotic Car?
This may well be one of the most disputed terms for these high-performance luxury cars. Does "exotic" encompass a car with more than 600 hp? Does the price determine whether a car is considered exotic? Or perhaps it is a car with limited production numbers. In truth, it can be all of these descriptions or none of them.
A car is exotic when its fan base says it is. An exotic car is one that could be just marginally below a Supercar in terms of availability, price, and performance, but it is also a rare car that is seen infrequently. Or, an exotic car can be either a supercar or a hypercar. Many of the exotic cars you know and love were the precursors to today’s hypercars and supercars.
What is a Supercar?
Supercars have high horsepower, price tags that often exceed a million dollars, and lap times that most cars only dream of. The features and specs of a supercar outperform the best of the best of today’s racecars. More than a hundred years ago, the term supercar described an Ensign 6 with a 6.7 liter engine. Supercars are designed to excel on roadways and racetracks.
The four terms that usually describe a supercar are price, design, technology, and performance, but a car does not necessarily need to have all four to be considered a supercar. A prime example is the Corvette C7 Z06, which is typically considered a supercar because of its design and outstanding lap times, yet the cost hovers around $100,000.
Supercars have engines that often exceed 500 horsepower, along with advanced suspension and braking systems. Strategically placed air intakes are optimized to channel airflow to cool all critical components, including the engine and brakes. Stability is enhanced with diffusers and aerodynamic elements like wings, and these cars are often built with carbon fiber to reduce weight and improve speed.
Meet the Hypercar – a Step Above a Supercar
For a car to reach hypercar status, every single boundary involving design, performance, technology, and luxury must be surpassed. A mere one percent of all supercars are considered hypercars. Three well-known hypercars that immediately come to mind include the Porsche 918, the Ferrari La Ferrari, and the McLaren P1. The biggest difference between a supercar and a hypercar is that a hypercar pushes the boundaries of what is possible while being produced in even more limited quantities than supercars. An exotic car can be a hypercar or a supercar.
Each hypercar model edges very close to 1,000 horsepower and has cutting-edge technology, stunning performance and design, and a price tag of over a million dollars. When you think "hypercar," think of exclusivity in every single aspect, and you will more fully understand the term. Hypercars take everything to the next level – which also happens to be the highest level attained.
